Chief Joseph

Chief Joseph - second in the great chiefs series. Chief and Elder of the Nez Percé “I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say, “Yes” or “No.” He who led the young men [Olikut] is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are — perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever”.

Sitting Bull
September 2nd, 2006 by eris
The first in the “Great Chiefs “ series, Sitting Bull embodies the innate nobility, intelligence, and defiance found in the spirit of native American peoples everywhere. His love of his people, the land and his generosity to Indian and white alike brought him respect worldwide. The chief of the Sioux nation.

Another sand painting inspired by another untitled painting by George Catlin in 1838. This fierce looking warrior has his bow and arrow at the ready, he has his war paint on and the depiction of a buffalo on his face and chest and yet for all his war like demeanor he wears a traditional peace medal around his neck.

War or Peace
September 2nd, 2006 by eris
This portrait was inspired by an untitled painting done in 1832 by George Catlin. I’m inspired by the colors and the calm demeanor captured in the folds of this warriors face. It struck me that this warrior is presenting a choice, war or peace. He has his war paint on ready to fight and yet is holding a peace pipe in offering; such is the paradox of man.
